The importance of well-ventilated outdoor clothing

The importance of well-ventilated outdoor clothing

During all forms of physical activity, the body generates heat. To regulate this heat, the body also produces cooling sweat. By choosing the right clothing based on the activity and temperature conditions, and using the garments' integrated ventilation options correctly, you help your body stay dry and cool. In extreme environments, this can make the difference between life and death, and in everyday life, it ensures a more enjoyable experience and more energy for the activity you are engaged in.

A well-designed outdoor garment should be crafted in such a way that moisture and excess heat are efficiently expelled, while cool, dry air is effectively drawn in. This is achieved through both general material choices and specially integrated ventilation features. If moisture and excess heat cannot escape from your jacket or pants, there is a risk of becoming wet to the skin, and during periods of inactivity or changing weather conditions, you may begin to feel cold due to your own sweat."

Ventilation from the inside out

When choosing clothing, it's easy to focus on weather protection from the outside in, meaning that the jacket or pants should be windproof and waterproof. Equally important is to assess the clothing's ability to manage moisture and temperature regulation from the inside out. In many cases where outdoor activities have led to frostbite, it's due to one's own sweat production, where moisture has stayed trapped inside the garment, creating a chilling effect from the inside.

By wearing garments where the primary materials themselves have breathable properties, and the circulation effect is enhanced by strategically placed ventilation openings, moisture and excess heat are continuously ventilated out. In most cases, it's not about survival or avoiding risky situations - it's more about maintaining good comfort, which is not a reason to underestimate its importance.

Ventilation in Garphyttan's clothing

To begin with, virtually all our garments are made from proven materials that allow for the transport of both moisture and air through the fabric itself. In our outerwear, for example, we've combined moisture-wicking and moisture-absorbing textile fibers to protect against weather and wind while allowing internal moisture to be transported away from the body for evaporation in the outer layers.

In addition to this, we have integrated generous ventilation openings in all garments that require them. Many of our pants feature ventilation zippers on both the upper and lower legs. Jackets and fleece jackets have ventilation openings under the arms. The latter placement allows for ventilation through multiple layers simultaneously, and the opening can also be used to quickly access equipment in inner pockets.

"Why don't you have mesh in your ventilation openings?"

The body is highly efficient when it comes to generating heat. Therefore, ventilation options must have a comparable (counteracting) capacity. Adding mesh to a ventilation opening limits the potential airflow and associated ventilation effect by up to 70%.

This makes the choice easy for us. Maximum airflow trumps trends and norms. Instead, we have equipped all ventilation openings with practical two-way zippers. This allows you to regulate where the opening is positioned and how large it becomes.

More ventilation hacks

In addition to ventilation-specific functionality, there are several other ways to adjust the airflow of the garments:

  • Button every other button on your shirt or overshirt.
  • Open the fly or pockets on your pants.
  • Lower the zipper on your fleece or jacket.
